World’s First Floating Windmill Application Deploys Ethernet Direct Industrial Gigabit Managed Switches

The leading energy company in oil and gas production in Northern Europe invested in deploying the world’s first full-scale floating wind turbine, project Hywind. The purpose of Hywind project is to explore and experiment how to make use of the wind resources at sea to the largest extent, evaluate the possibility of commercialize this idea, and make the floating windmills the next generation of energy supply. Turbine manufactured by Siemens, floater built by Technip, power cables laid by Nexans, and plus the energy company’s own long time experience and expertise in oil & gas industry and knowledge of wind power, Hywind was successfully and stably installed and began its test of power generation in 2009. In order to monitor and control the status of this innovative floating windmill, a reliable communication network is a must. The project deployed Ethernet Direct’s HMG-628G, an industrial 6-port 10/100/1000Base-T(X) plus 2 x copper/SFP ports full gigabit managed Ethernet switch for its fast transmission speed, and flexibility in choosing fiber interface. HMG-628G also comes with X-Ring ring redundancy designs, which can auto-recover from a disconnection in the primary transmission path by using the backup path within less than 10ms. Interoperability and reliability are the key points considered for this world pioneer energy project.
